Where to Start Your Freelance Writing Career
If I had never been told where to get started in the freelance writing business, I would be completely lost today. While writing for other people and blogs can be profitable, if you don’t know where to get jobs in the beginning, it may seem like an entirely uphill battle. I’ve listed a few sites below that are easy to get started on and don’t require much skill or reputation to land jobs. While those things help in time, these sites are especially friendly to newbies and hopefully after you’ve written there for a while, you can move on to bigger and better things (AKA more pay).
Digital Point Forums
http://forums.digitalpoint.com
You’ll have to sign up before you’ll be able to start looking for writing jobs, but the process doesn’t take much time at all. Digital Point Forums have been the starting place for many freelance writers in the past, and will probably continue to serve that function into the future. While the content level expected in the content creation portion of the site is often low, it provides a good springboard to find honest work that pays a fare wage.
Before you can start asking for work though, you need to be around the forums for about 2 weeks and make a certain number of posts before you can make it into the Content Creation forum. Once you’re eligible, make your way through the forums to the “Content Creation” sub-forum and read some of the posts looking for writers. Posts are abbreviated with “WTB” or “WTS,” meaning “wanting to buy” or “wanting to sell” respectively. Standard pay for writers around the forum is about $1/100 words. As you complete jobs, you can leave positive feedback known as iTrader for the person you worked with. These iTrader points make you a more reputable client and member of the site, eventually leading to higher paying and bigger jobs.
Textbroker
You can read the full review of Textbroker here.
Textbroker allows anyone to sign up, and after you’ve been approved by the staff with your application, you’ll be eligible to open up a list of jobs that need doing. A simple click of a mouse on the “Accept Job” button next to an article’s description will lock you into writing that article for a client. The pay rate at Textbroker is slightly higher than at Digital Point, so if you’re tired of working for $1/100 words, you can move up to about 2 cents/word. I loved Textbroker when I first started, and I still use it when I need to fill in time between other clients.
Payment is direct to Paypal after you’ve earned $100 writing articles on the site, meaning it’s extremely easy to use. Anything that deposits direct to Paypal on a regular basis is handy and easy to keep track of.
Constant-Content
Constant-Content is the final place to start off writing if you’re not sure where to get the ball rolling from. I only recently found out about Constant-Content, so I’m still a little amazed at how helpful it is when you’re in a pinch to sell an article or just have something that you wrote and want to get rid of. The site works by allowing anyone to sign up that passes an easy writing exam. From there, articles can be submitted to the site to be tagged and indexed in their system. Publishers can browse through articles and buy the unique rights to articles for well above standard pay grade when you’re a beginner.
You may think it’s difficult for your articles to be bought, but with the right tags, all of mine have sold within a week of being posted. Constant-Content also emails you and your site inbox to let you know what content has just been requested by publishers, so you can target your next article towards them. And the good thing is, most content requests are for a batch of articles as opposed to just a single one. Constant-Content will pay you via Paypal at the end of each month, regardless of how much you’ve earned selling the rights or renting your articles out.
